Wonderlawn Artificial Grass FAQs

No, we do not allow anyone other than Wonderlawn staff to install our products.

All you need is a deck chair and a cup of tea! 🙂

Occasionally, we may ask you to mow the lawn before the team arrives as this can aide our removal process, and possibly to move any furniture (if we need to work through the house), but under normal circumstances, Wonderlawn takes care of everything.

We may also ask you to hire a skip for waste materials to be disposed of. This will vary from job to job and our trained surveyors will discuss this with you when you have your site visit.

We’ve completed thousands of installations on all sorts of surfaces including concrete yards, school tarmac playgrounds, timber balconies and gravel drives.

We use different materials to suit the existing ground, but artificial grass can be installed almost anywhere as long as the correct methods and materials are used.

Over the years we have created mounds on flat playgrounds, luscious gardens from dark urban yards, indoor picnic areas from boring cafeterias, and of course, the odd normal lawn.

A typical lawn of 45m² first requires removal of 2-3 tonnes of earth (that’s around 40 wheelbarrows’ full). It then needs the same amount of new material added to create the new base, which then needs to be levelled and compacted.

The grass of choice is then cut into size, including any joins that are needed. As part of our installation process, we install an infill with purpose-built machines. This infill plays a really important role in the integrity of the lawn and its ability to recover after use, just like a sports field. The area is then cleaned down and everything left just the way it should be.

There are two main reasons for this;

  1. There are specific machines used in our installations which you will not have. There is no point in buying premium artificial grass if it cannot be installed correctly.
  2.  Wonderlawn is protective about our brand. If lawns are installed badly, it is our name that tends to suffer.

Artificial grass is not completely maintenance-free but it is low-maintenance.

On a regular basis, you may need to remove debris and leaves from the lawn, just as you would the real thing. This is best done with a stiff broom, garden blower or hoover. You also might get the odd weed that comes from airborne seeds that have landed on the grass, but these cannot root anywhere and simply need to be picked out.

Other than that, it’s just a case of sitting back, using your lawn as you would normally, and enjoying the garden.

Most artificial grass is manufactured with drainage holes, to allow water to move freely through it. Our base materials are free draining. This means that your new lawn will likely drain much better than the old one.

Quite usually, a Wonderlawn artificial lawn is dry within a few minutes of it raining. And remember that if the kids or the dogs venture out in the rain, the only thing that comes back into the house is a bit of water.

Rarely, if a customer has a particular issue with standing water or poor drainage, this can be combated with soakaways or field drains.

Wonderlawn are currently the only artificial grass company in Europe that has a product with a fire safety certificate, for use indoors.

Artificial grass is made of plastic and therefore would melt under extreme heat. The sand infill used on all of our products adds a significant benefit to its ability to be “self-extinguishing.”

We always advise being careful with barbeques, outdoor fires and cigarettes to prevent permanent damage.

Artificial grass is a great solution for active kids!

Whether it’s a small back garden or a school field for football, hockey or Roly Poly, it helps give kids a safe, clean and tactile surface for outdoor play. Older “Astro Turf” products had an issue of burning on knees and legs, but with our modern materials, this is generally a thing of the past.

Another benefit is the lack of mud and dirt that is no longer brought back into the home or school.

All Wonderlawn’s products are made from polyethylene. As a result, when the dog wees, it simply runs off the grass and into the base.

Whilst you can simply leave this alone and let the rain do the work, it’s also helpful to rinse it through, which helps it on its way. With dog dirt, you’ll need to remove it as best you can, and then rinse anything left away. If you have children in the house, we always advise using a bit of household disinfectant and paper towel on the area, simply for health and safety reasons.

One really important aspect of dealing with dog mess is the infill. All Wonderlawn’s products are installed with an infill which is there to weigh the lawn down and help hold the fibres upright. This infill also means that dog mess cannot find it’s way into the root fibres and is therefore much easier to clean.

With many other artificial grasses, there may be a particular issue with dog urine smells, but Wonderlawn offer a unique infill, “Petfill Plus”, which helps combat this.

Around 50% of our customers buy Wonderlawn for their dog.

Our four-legged friends are never happier than being outdoors and an artificial lawn provides a great playing surface, without the issue of muddy paws or dirt coming back into the house.

High quality artificial turf, installed correctly, is very resistant to the typical digging and scratching that dogs do. We find that dogs enjoy rolling around using the grass as a handy back scratcher rather than trying in vain to dig it up.

Basically, Petfill Plus is an organic mineral that is used as an infill for Wonderlawn grass. It works by absorbing and retaining the ammonia in dog urine, and then releasing it to the sodium ions in rainwater when it rains. This washes it into the ground, and the Petfill is then refreshed to do its job all over again.

Whilst most gardens do not need this specialist infill it can be an option where the dog only has use of a confined space.

Wonderlawn’s artificial grass is made from polyethylene, polypropylene or a combination of both.

Whilst most manufacturers use latex rubber as a backing, Wonderlawn now have products that are made with Polyurethane. This means that at the end of the products’ life, they can be recycled, much like a plastic bottle. Great for the environment!

As we are the only company to provide a warranty for our basework, it needs to be right.

We construct our bases to match the requirements of the ground. Some will need a coarse aggregate first, usually Type 1 MOT, and then crushed granite, or crushed granite alone. We never use sharp sand or timber in the base, as these do not provide the stability required over time.

All of Wonderlawn’s artificial grass is manufactured in Europe. We do not buy any products from the Far East.

Firstly, sand is a much cheaper alternative to stone and granite. Timber is necessary because these companies do not install an infill to weigh the grass down, but they need to fix it to something to stop it blowing away or being stolen!

Unfortunately, this timber is prone to rotting over time. This is the main reason why companies using timber will not guarantee the base work for anything more than a couple of years.

As with most products, it’s simply down to cost. Many manufacturers do whatever they can to be competitive and unfortunately, where costs are cut, quality suffers. As with most products manufactured in the Far East, it’s all about money. Specifications are changed on a regular basis and quality control can be lacking as companies fight for business. A growing number of UK-based artificial grass retailers buy from the Far East because it’s cheap so it is always worth asking where they buy from and why.

All artificial grass is designed and manufactured to be UV-stable for a period of time.

All of Wonderlawn’s products are UV stable for a minimum of 10 years and are guaranteed for that period. Unfortunately, many products from the Far East and other regions have not followed the same stringent criteria and as a result, can fade quite quickly.
